8 Amazing Facts About Mandrills:
- They are the only mammals with blue pigment in their skin, making them stand out beautifully in a crowd.
- Though they are the largest of all monkeys, they are shy and reclusive. They are the gentle giants of the monkey kingdom.
- Mandrills know how to get along - both males and females help each other to find food and hunt together.
- Sometimes they shake their head and "grin" to show their enormous canine teeth, which can be over 5 cm / 2” long. This may appear scary to us, but it’s usually a friendly gesture within the mandrill community.
- The jungle is their home - mandrills live in the rainforests of equatorial Africa.
- Mandrills are excellent climbers, choosing a different treetop each evening to tuck themselves into for sleep.
- These colourful primates are threatened as they are often hunted as bushmeat.
- Their cheeks have built-in pouches that are used to store snacks for later. Who wouldn’t want a built-in snack stash??
